Here we have a complete, vintage set of cinema “Lobby Cards” (also known as “Front of House Cards” here in the UK). Each card measures 10″ x 8″ and was produced to promote the release of Warren Beatty’s big-screen adaptation of the classic newspaper comic strip character Dick Tracy. Each card is different and printed on premium quality card, with a glossier than usual finish (for this kind of authentic movie memorabilia). They have a vibrant yellow background, firmly in-keeping with the stunning visuals cinemagoers encountered and enjoyed when seeing the film in cinemas.

As an unusually generous set of twelve images this is an especially stunning find for collectors and fans of Dick Tracy, Warren Beatty and of course “Breathless” herself: Madonna!

Collector’s notes..

One of the 12 cards present is especially unusual, as it is for “Tummy Trouble” and not the main movie! For those unaware, Tummy Trouble was a special short animated feature which was routinely screened before Dick Tracy (for reasons I don’t know..) and starred Roger Rabbit.

Intended to be displayed in the foyer of British cinemas , “Front of House” cards were printed marketing materials, typically measuring 10 x 8 inches (5:4 ratio). They were occasionally printed on thinner (or sometimes thicker..) paper/card stock – compared to their American equivalents (known as “Lobby Cards” or “Colour Stills”).

They were issued in sets of eight different images, although on occasion the total number of cards rose to 12, 16 or even more.

Lifespan & Value

After use these precious pieces of ephemera were supposed to be either destroyed, or returned to the distrubution company promoting the film. As a result it is becoming increasingly difficult to find surviving examples of these types of memorabilia – particularly if in “unused” condition with little or no blemishes.

An Investment in the Future

Sadly, these collectable cards ceased production many decades ago (having become obsolete with the rise of digital display boards inside and outside of cinemas, along with CD/Rom press kits also replacing printed materials). Since then they have become increasingly popular with collectors and cinema enthusiasts alike – typically being seen as a more affordable and compact option compared to unwieldy movie posters and banners.
