The (printed on, not labelled) caption on this vintage still reads:

“Eric Liddell (IAN CHARLESON) reaches the tape first during his first race against Harold Abrahams (BEN CROSS), with whom he later becomes friends.”

Collector’s note: on the reverse side of this item (not pictured) there is a former agency sticky label with contact details etc. It does not interfere with the front of the card and has been left in place for fear of damaging the item in an attempt to remove it.

Film Synopsis*

The 1981 film Chariots of Fire tells the true story of two British runners competing in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian, runs for the glory of God and refuses to compete in a race on a Sunday, leading to a dramatic schedule change. Harold Abrahams, an English Jew, runs to overcome prejudice and prove his worth in the face of anti-Semitism. The film follows their different paths to the Olympics, culminating in their respective races and their shared pursuit of excellence and personal conviction. The iconic, synth-driven score by Vangelis is a major feature of the film.

What are/were they?

Intended to be displayed in the foyer of British cinemas , “Front of House” cards were printed marketing materials, typically measuring 10 x 8 inches (5:4 ratio). They were occasionally printed on thinner (or sometimes thicker..) paper/card stock – compared to their American equivalents (known as “Lobby Cards” or “Colour Stills”).

They were issued in sets of eight different images, although on occasion the total number of cards rose to 12, 16 or even more.

Lifespan & Value

After use these precious pieces of ephemera were supposed to be either destroyed, or returned to the distrubution company promoting the film. As a result it is becoming increasingly difficult to find surviving examples of these types of memorabilia – particularly if in “unused” condition with little or no blemishes.

Authenticity & Provenance

Cards offered for sale here are guranteed to be authentic, vintage originals. Any blemishes or damage will be clearly and honestly described – along with photographs (of the actual item(s) for sale, unless clearly stated otherwise. Be sure to check all of the images provided!

An Investment in the Future

Sadly, these collectable cards ceased production many decades ago (having become obsolete with the rise of digital display boards inside and outside of cinemas, along with CD/Rom press kits also replacing printed materials). Since then they have become increasingly popular with collectors and cinema enthusiasts alike – typically being seen as a more affordable and compact option compared to unwieldy movie posters and banners.
